PC motherboards are the brains behind the system and any security issue with them could be exploited to steal data and cause severe damage.
PC users need motherboards and this issue is a big problem
Windows PC users have been issued a major security warning by the Indian government and it is in relation to the motherboard that powers the systems. Brands like Asus, MSI, AMD and even Gigabyte have been mentioned in the security note by the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team or CERT-In in December 2025, which affects millions of regular users, with possible attacks on their system. The message is clear, be mindful of what you are doing on the PCs and be safe.
CERT-In Security Alert Over PC Motherboards
The CERT-In bulletin dated December 24, 2025 comes with a high severity rating and the security agency shares the details of risks. “These vulnerabilities exist due to improper enforcement of DMA protections during the early boot phase, which could allow a local attacker with physical access to exploit a malicious PCIe device to gain unauthorised access to system memory before the operating system loads.”
Windows PCs are common almost everywhere and businesses rely on them for important tasks. But the motherboard security issue is equally dangerous for the regular users. Here’s the list of the brands and the motherboard models that are affected:
- ASRock motherboards using Intel 500, 600, 700, and 800 series
- ASUS motherboards using Intel Z490, W480, B460, H410, Z590, B560, H510, Z690, B660, W680, Z790, B760, and W790 series
- GIGABYTE motherboards using Intel Z890, W880, Q870, B860, H810, Z790, B760, Z690, Q670, B660, H610, W790 series
- AMD motherboards using Intel X870E, X870, B850, B840, X670, B650, A620, A620A series
- MSI motherboards using Intel 600 and 700 series
The companies mentioned here have been apprised about the security risks and the software patches are already available. So, if you own a PC with any of the aforementioned motherboards powering them, we suggest you check for the company’s support page and install the latest update.
It is rare to see major alerts for chipsets running on PCs but when they do, people need to take them seriously, and execute the needed action immediately. And this alert coming from the government is as serious as they come.
