Narendra Modi to Inaugurate Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport Terminal in Assam, Unveil Gopinath Bardoloi Statue and Launch Key Projects

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive in Assam on December 20 for a two-day visit centred on the inauguration of the new terminal at the Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport, alongside a series of public engagements and project launches.

As part of the airport programme, the Prime Minister will unveil an 80-feet-tall statue of Assam’s first chief minister, Gopinath Bardoloi, installed outside the new Guwahati airport terminal building. The statue was sculpted by eminent artist Ram Sutar, who died on December 17 at the age of 101.

Sutar had created the 125-feet statue of Ahom general Lachit Barphukan at Jorhat, commemorating his historic victory over Mughal forces. That monument was unveiled by Modi in March 2024.
After the unveiling, the Prime Minister will inaugurate the ₹4,000-crore airport terminal and is expected to spend around 15 minutes at the facility. He will then address a public meeting near the terminal complex on Saturday.

From the airport, Modi will participate in a roadshow to the Bharatiya Janata Party’s state headquarters in the Basistha area, where he will interact with party workers. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the visit as unprecedented, stating that it is the first time a Prime Minister will visit a BJP office in Assam and calling it a “historic occasion”.

A party functionary said the interaction with workers assumes added significance with assembly elections scheduled in the state early next year.

The Prime Minister will stay overnight at the state guest house in Koinadhora, in the Khanapara area of Guwahati.

On Sunday, Modi will begin the day by interacting with 25 meritorious students from various schools as part of the ‘Pariksha pe Charcha’ programme. The session, lasting about half an hour, will be held aboard the cruise vessel ‘Charaideo’ while sailing on the Brahmaputra.

He will then visit the newly built ‘Swahid Smarak Kshetra’, a memorial dedicated to the 860 people who lost their lives during the Assam Movement that began in 1979. The Prime Minister will pay tribute at the site, visit the martyrs’ gallery and garland the statue of the first martyr, Khargeswar Talukdar.

Later, Modi will travel to Dibrugarh and Namrup to participate in the ‘Bhumi pujan’ ceremony of the ₹12,000-crore ammonia-urea fertiliser plant. Officials said the project is expected to give a significant push to the state’s growth and development.

He will also address a public meeting at Namrup before departing for New Delhi. Welcoming the Prime Minister, Sarma wrote on social media platform X: “A warm welcome to Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji to the land of Maa Kamakhya and Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev.”

He added, “During Saturday and Sunday, Adarniya Modi ji will usher in mega development initiatives for Assam and pay tributes to our brave martyrs.”
