Apple TV app users are getting a useful update this week which allows them to use the casting option to stream content from their phone to the big screen. The Google cast support is available for the Android version of Apple TV which runs on phones and tablets but then transmits the content to the TV.

The change comes at a time when Netflix removed its casting option for the mobile users. The update has been rolled out in the last week and most Apple TV users should be getting it soon.

The cast option has been available for many years but it is good to see Apple TV at least on Android getting this feature. The update means you see the cast icon on the top-right of the app whenever you choose a movie or a TV show to watch on the Apple TV app.

When you tap on the Cast icon, you will see the devices that support the feature and let you ‘Cast to’ any one of them. Now you will see a dark interface with the playback and volume controls on the mobile app while the content plays on the big screen.

Casting has been a reliable way to stream content to the big TV which also has the feature available but Netflix is clearly not keen to have the support anymore so that people with special plans cannot misuse its access.

Netflix has a slew of plans that caters to mobile, laptop and TV streaming and ending support for casting via third-party devices seems like a move to prevent misuse. The change in the rules has been spotted in the Netflix support page, first reported by Android Authority.

The page also explains that if your TV streaming device or TV has a remote then you can use the native Netflix app running on them instead of casting from the mobile. The change is also being observed with the newer TVs and streaming devices which means the older Chromecast devices are still working but that could be linked to the lack of updates and possible security risks posed by them and their support should be cut off soon.
