Ranveer Singh’s spy thriller Dhurandhar has finally hit the theatres on Friday, December 5. Directed by Aditya Dhar, the film also stars Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Rampal, Akshaye Khanna, R Madhavan, and Sara Arjun in key roles. The high-stakes espionage thriller is inspired by real covert operations of Indian intelligence, set against the backdrop of events like the IC-814 hijacking in 1999.

While the film is said to be the most violent in Indian cinema, fans are lauding the Hollywood-level scale at which the story is visualised. But right before the release of Dhurandhar, it ran into some trouble. The parents of late Major Mohit Sharma, Ashoka Chakra and Sena Medal awardee, had approached the Delhi High Court seeking an immediate stay on the release of the film.

They alleged in their petition that Dhurandhar is based on the life, undercover missions, and martyrdom of the decorated Special Forces officer, all without permission from the family or the Indian Army. They sought protection for their son’s legacy. However, later, the film’s director clarified that his spy thriller is fictional and not based on the Major’s life.

Who Was Major Mohit Sharma?

Mohit Sharma was born on January 13, 1978, in Rohtak, Haryana. Since childhood, he had a clear sense of duty. He joined the National Defence Academy (NDA) in 1995 and later the Indian Military Academy (IMA). In December 1999, he was commissioned in the 5th Battalion of the Madras Regiment. Following a brief stint in J&K in the Rashtriya Rifles, Mohit Sharma volunteered to join the Special Forces.

Following training and probation, he finally earned a place in 1 Parachute Battalion (Special Forces), one of India’s most elite commando units. To date, Major Mohit Sharma remains one of the most extraordinary figures in India’s modern military history. In the early 2000s, he undertook a covert mission that would become the stuff of military folklore.

Operating under the alias “Iftikhar Bhatt,” he infiltrated the Hizbul Mujahideen network from within. He gathered intelligence, gained trust, and navigated extreme danger during the operation. He was awarded the Sena Medal during this tenure.

How Did Major Mohit Sharma Die?

In 2009, the Major was deployed with a Special Forces unit in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara. During an intense encounter in the Hafruda Forest, he led his team against heavily armed militants. Despite sustaining multiple gunshot wounds, he continued fighting, rescued two of his men, and neutralised four terrorists before making the ultimate sacrifice. For his unparalleled bravery, he was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry award.

Why Major Mohit Sharma’s Parents Alleged That Dhurandhar Is Based On His Life?

In the movie, Ranveer Singh’s character infiltrates a terrorist network operating in Pakistan, much like the Major. This led the family to move to the Delhi HC seeking an immediate stay. And not just his family; social media also speculated that Ranveer’s character, and many others’, are based on real-life personalities.

For example, Sanjay Dutt’s character is speculated to be Chaudhary Aslam Khan Swati, an ‘encounter specialist’ of the Karachi police, who was killed in a bomb blast in 2014. Meanwhile, Akshaye Khanna’s character is supposedly based on Sardar Abdul Rehman Baloch, a well-known criminal based in Karachi’s Lyari locality. R. Madhavan’s role is similar to that of National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.

What Did The Court Say?

The court closed the petition, asking the Central Board of Film Certification to consider all relevant points, including the concerns raised by the petitioners, before issuing the film a certificate for release. It also said that if needed, the board should consult the relevant authorities of the Indian Army before making a final decision. On December 2, the censor board gave it a green signal, stating that Dhurandhar is not linked to the life of Major Mohit Sharma either directly or indirectly.
