The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly called an urgent meeting of key men’s team stakeholders to iron out issues of communication between the national selectors, the team management, and senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

According to Sportstar, the meeting will be held on Wednesday in Raipur, ahead of the second ODI between India and South Africa. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, joint secretary Prabhtej Singh Bhatia, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and chief selector Ajit Agarkar are expected to be involved, while there’s no clarity over newly-appointed board president Mithun Manhas or any players’ participation.

The outlet cited an anonymous official as saying the motive of the meeting is to ‘ensure alignment’ between the selectors and the team management, ensure ‘selection consistency’, and improve pathways for individual players.

“During the home Test season, there have been instances of confusing tactics on and off the field. We want clarity and forward planning, especially with the next Test series eight months away,” the quoted official said.

Crucially, the report also said that the BCCI is concerned about ‘communication gaps’ between the team management and ‘senior limited-overs players’, likely to be Kohli and Rohit. It said that there have been ‘whispers of reduced dialogue’ between the duo and the current team management.

“India will be favourites to defend the T20 World Cup next year and strong contenders for the ODI World Cup after that, so we want these issues resolved quickly,” the official was quoted as saying.

Gambhir is under pressure after overseeing two home Test series whitewashes since taking over last year, with the most recent being against South Africa, with losses in Kolkata and Guwahati.

Kohli and Rohit are fighting for their places in the 2027 World Cup squad, although they would be 39 and 30, respectively, during the tournament in Africa.

Rohit scored a century in India’s last ODI, where Kohli also picked up a fifty, which was followed by Gambhir’s strong statement about not rating any ‘individual performances’ when the series is lost. Kohli picked up a masterful century on Sunday in the first ODI against South Africa in Ranchi.
