On a pitch where 32 wickets fell inside two days of play, Travis Head produced an innings of a lifetime to propel Australia to a famous eight-wicket win over England in Perth. Head blazed away to a magical century to help Australia chase down 205 with relative ease and secure a 1-0 lead in the five-match Ashes series.

Promoted to open the innings in place of Usman Khawaja, Head deflated England bowlers on a spicy pitch that had pace and bounce in abundance and on which only one batter before him managed to cross the 50-run mark during the first Test. He struck 16 fours and four sixes in an 83-ball 123, bringing the capacity crowd at the Perth Stadium to its feet.

Saturday was just the latest occasion when Head single-handedly decided the outcome of a contest. Ex-India head coach Ravi Shastri is aware of that sinking feeling that Head can condemn opposition teams to as he has been at the receiving end of his two centuries in the title clashes of the ICC World Test Championship and ODI World Cup, both in 2023.

Shastri was in awe of Head’s “blistering” show on the second day of the Perth Test, calling it one of the greatest innings.

“Travis Head… two years ago, you plunged my country into silence. And today, you have done it again, in the best format of the game, in blistering fashion, with one of the great innings. Take a bow. England… that was special,” Shastri wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
