India approach a rare must-win Test encounter on home turf in Guwahati, starting Saturday, November 22, after going down shockingly in the series opener against South Africa.
The hosts dug a hole for the Proteas and fell badly into it themselves on a spiteful turner with excessive uneven bounce in the first Test.
The visitors bravely confronted the challenge and upset their much-fancied opponents to win and take an unassailable 1-0 lead in the two-match series. Temba Bavuma’s men proved their doubters wrong and showed why they are the deserving World Test Championship holders by backing their recent victory in Rawalpindi with another major overseas win in Kolkata.
A huge crowd at the iconic Eden Gardens witnessed a remarkable turnaround after ace speedster Jasprit Bumrah’s 5 for 27 on Day 1 had reduced the tourists to 159 all out. On a surface where a deficit of 70+ could’ve been seriously damaging to their chances, South Africa kick-started their comeback by limiting the Indian advantage to just 30 runs, thanks to off-spinner Simon Harmer’s 4 for 30 and pacer Marco Jansen’s 3 for 35.
Bavuma then led his troops from the front and played a pivotal knock of 55 not out off 136 deliveries in the critical third innings, showing great resolve and trust in his defence while other Proteas batters tried to hit their way out of trouble.
His impactful innings helped South Africa cross the 150-mark and set India a target of 124 runs.
Having lost their skipper and in-form No.4 Shubman Gill to a neck injury, India approached the chase on a tricky slope and eventually crumbled to another high-class spell by Harmer.
The experienced off-spinner showed his unrelenting control on a pitch turning square by Day 3 and picked 4 for 21 to hand his team a historic 30-run victory. Only Washington Sundar (31) showed similar gumption to Bavuma during the Indian innings, which ended with a painstaking 93 all out.
Weather Forecast
There will be long periods of sunshine on Day 1 of the second Test in Guwahati. There is a 25% chance of rain throughout the afternoon but weather disruptions aren’t very likely.
