The Indian cricket team landed in Guwahati on Wednesday. After losing the first Test at Eden Gardens, the hosts will look to bounce back against the Proteas in what will be the first-ever Test match at Guwahati’s Barsapara Cricket Stadium. The defeat has hurt India’s ego, tampering with their records in home Tests. Shubman Gill’s neck injury has further deepened their top-order problems, making it look fragile.

The injury sustained on the second day of the Eden Gardens Test ruled him out of the entire match. Most likely, he would sit out in Guwahati as well. Meanwhile, a video of Team India’s arrival in Assam has surfaced on social media. Gill appears without his neck brace but is still in discomfort, unable to move his neck.

According to the Indian Express, the Indian skipper will miss the second Test, starting 22 November. Vice-captain Rishabh Pant will take in Gill’s absence, while Sai Sudharsan will take a spot in the top order.

BCCI’s Latest Update on Gill

The Indian cricket board on Wednesday rolled out an official release, stating that Gill has been responding well to the treatment. However, a call on his participation will be taken closer to the game.

“Medical Update: Shubman Gill. Team India captain Shubman Gill suffered a neck injury on Day 2 of the Kolkata Test against South Africa and was taken to the hospital for examination after the end of the day’s play,” the release read.

“He was kept under observation and discharged the next day. Shubman has been responding well to the medical treatment provided and will travel to Guwahati with the team on 19th November, 2025. He will continue to be monitored by the BCCI medical team, and a decision on his participation in the 2nd Test will be taken accordingly,” it added.

Shubman Gill picked up a neck injury while batting in the first innings of the Kolkata Test and did not take the field during South Africa’s second innings. He also skipped India’s chase of 124, raising concerns about his availability.

The right-hander was taken to a Kolkata hospital after the second day’s play and discharged the next afternoon.
