A major Cloudflare outage on Tuesday triggered widespread disruptions across some of the world’s most heavily used websites and apps, with users reporting failures on X, ChatGPT, Spotify, Canva, Perplexity, and several other platforms.
The issue began earlier today, quickly escalating as thousands of outage reports poured in on Downdetector by the evening.
Cloudflare confirmed that its network was experiencing a large-scale failure, resulting in 500 errors across multiple services, including its own dashboard and API.
The company said it was investigating the root cause and working to stabilise its systems, warning that users may continue to encounter errors while recovery is underway.

What Happened?
Cloudflare functions as a critical backbone for a huge section of the internet.
Its services include DNS management, content delivery (CDN), and protection against DDoS attacks.
Because so many unrelated websites rely on Cloudflare for traffic routing and security, even a single glitch can cause simultaneous outages across the web.
On Thursday, that is exactly what happened. Visiting affected sites such as X, OpenAI products (including ChatGPT), Spotify, Letterboxd, Perplexity, Gemini, and Canva often resulted in error pages stating that Cloudflare could not load the requested content.
Many users encountered internal server error messages tied directly to Cloudflare’s network instability.
Impact On Key Platforms
OpenAI confirmed ChatGPT was down and said its teams were investigating. Although the company did not immediately link the issue to Cloudflare, the timing coincided with the global outage affecting numerous services.
Downdetector, itself dependent on Cloudflare, briefly struggled to load. Once back online, it displayed a sharp surge in complaints for X, Spotify, and other apps.
Cloudflare later said some systems were starting to recover but cautioned that elevated error rates could persist until all fixes were deployed.
Cloudflare is one of the most widely used internet infrastructure providers. It ensures websites remain stable during traffic spikes, handles massive data flows, and shields platforms from cyberattacks.
As a result, a malfunction in Cloudflare’s network can instantly take down dozens of unrelated services.
