Shubman Gill retired hurt on four after holding his neck during the first Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens.

India captain Shubman Gill retired hurt with neck spasm after facing just three deliveries of the morning session of the ongoing first Test against South Africa, being underway at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens. Gill was seen holding his neck immediately after hitting a boundary as the physio rushed to the middle.
After a few moments, Gill, appearing stiff, walked off the field, retired hurt on four.
BCCI said the middle-order batter is being monitored by its medical team and a decision on his participation for the remainder of the second day’s play will be taken later.
“Shubman Gill has a neck spasm and is being monitored by the BCCI medical team. A decision on his participation today will be taken as per his progress,” BCCI posted on X.
Gill’s premature exit meant Rishabh Pant walked out to bat next.
Earlier, India resumed on their overnight score of 37/1 with opener KL Rahul and no. 3 Washington Sundar watchful before opening up. The pair had added 57 runs for the second wicket when Simon Harmer struck with the scalp of Sundar on 29 (82 balls, two fours, one six).
In walked skipper Gill and, given how the pitch was becoming difficult to bat on, he too adopted the aggressive approach and opened his account with a sweep shot for a boundary. However, the effort took a toll on his neck, with commentator Cheteshwar Pujara describing it as neck spasm.
Rahul was the next wicket to fall thanks to a sharp catch from Aiden Markram. He scored 39 off 119 with the help of four fours and a six.

Bumrah delivered a remarkable performance over just two sessions, as South Africa tumbled from a strong 57 without loss in 10 overs to losing all 10 wickets for a mere 102 runs in the next 45 overs. Their innings lasted just four hours and 13 minutes after choosing to bat first.
Bumrah finished with 5/27 from 14 overs.
India concluded the day at 37 for one in 20 overs, with KL Rahul (13 not out from 59 balls) and Washington Sundar (six not out; 38 balls) holding firm at the crease. This came after Yashasvi Jaiswal (12) was bowled by Marco Jansen while trying to play close to his body.
South Africa are without the services of their lead pacer Kagiso Rabada, who sat out from the contest due to a rib injury.
