Jasprit Bumrah is leading India’s bowling attack in the ongoing first Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, and on Day 1, he picked up five wickets for 27 runs in his quota of 14 overs. The five-wicket haul by Bumrah on Friday (November 14) helped him become the first fast bowler in 17 years to dismiss at least five batters on Day 1 of a red-ball match played in India.
The last fast bowler to take at least five wickets on Day 1 of a red-ball Test in India was Dale Steyn of South Africa.
Steyn picked up five wickets for 23 runs in eight overs against India in Ahmedabad on April 3, 2008.
On November 22, 2019, Ishant Sharma also picked up five wickets for 22 runs in 12 overs on Day 1 of a Test match played in Kolkata, but that fixture was played with a pink ball.
In October 2024, New Zealand’s Matt Henry dismissed five Indian batters on the scheduled second day of the Bengaluru Test after the entire first day’s play was washed out.
The fifer by Bumrah on Friday is his 16th five-wicket haul in Test cricket. Only four bowlers – Ravichandran Ashwin, Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh and Kapil Dev – have picked up more five-wicket hauls in Tests for India than Bumrah.
