Indian families choose snow over sand as winter travel abroad surges 30%: Agoda

As winter approaches, more Indian families are swapping beach holidays for snow-covered adventures abroad. According to digital travel platform Agoda, interest in international family travel between December 2025 and February 2026 has risen by 30% year-on-year, signalling a growing fascination with festive, wintry destinations across Asia and Europe.

Agoda’s latest data shows that Indian travellers are increasingly seeking holidays that combine snow, culture and family-friendly activities. “More Indian families are embracing the joy of travel during the winter months,” said Gaurav Malik, Country Director for the Indian Subcontinent and Indian Ocean Islands at Agoda. “This trend highlights families’ growing desire for experiences that blend togetherness, cultural discovery, and the festive spirit of the holiday season in cold-weather destinations across Asia and Europe.”

Within Asia, South Korea, China, and Kazakhstan have emerged as the top gainers in year-on-year search interest, with South Korea leading at +226%, followed by China at +105%, and Kazakhstan at +68%. Taiwan (+44%) and Japan (+41%) also remain popular among families seeking a balance of tradition and adventure. From South Korea’s ski resorts and K-drama-inspired experiences to China’s famed ice festivals, Indian families are showing an appetite for immersive, culture-led holidays.

Kazakhstan’s rugged mountain scenery offers nature-filled escapes, while Japan continues to charm visitors with its hot springs, winter illuminations, and attractions such as Tokyo Disney Resort and Universal Studios Japan. Taiwan draws attention with its lively lantern festivals, bustling night markets, and blend of urban and outdoor experiences, making it one of Asia’s most accessible winter getaways.

In Europe, the trend is equally strong. Austria (+82%) leads the growth chart, followed by Germany (+43%), Finland (+33%), Italy (+27%), and France (+20%). These destinations, famous for their Christmas markets, alpine ski resorts, and cosy festive atmosphere, are proving particularly popular among Indian families seeking authentic European winter experiences.

The surge in interest also reflects a broader change in Indian travel habits. Families are moving away from traditional sun-and-sand holidays towards seasonal, experiential travel that celebrates local culture and festive traditions. Improved international flight connectivity, easier visa access, and a curiosity to explore new regions have made far-flung winter destinations more attainable than ever.

Whether it’s soaking in Japan’s onsen hot springs, skiing in Austria’s alpine villages, or ringing in the New Year amid South Korea’s snowy landscapes, Indian travellers are redefining what winter holidays mean.

“Agoda continues to make these holidays easier to plan, with a wide range of stays, flights, and activities to ensure every family holiday is magical,” Malik added.

The data is based on searches made by Indian families between September and October 2025 for check-ins between December 2025 and February 2026, compared to the same period the previous year.
