Google Maps users are getting the new power-saving mode which allows you to limit the features on the screen and focus on the navigation. We had heard rumours about its rollout and now the company has officially introduced it, albeit for a select user base.

Navigation through Google Maps or any other app will drain your battery faster especially when you are on mobile data. The power saving tool makes a lot of sense as long as Google implements it the right way.

How It Works

The new update for Google Maps brings this mode which is only applicable in the driving mode. So using the bike mode will not let you switch the theme. Turning this mode on will reduce the details you will see on the screen and reduce the graphics quality and just focus on the turn-by-turn navigation system working effectively.

This will be like Maps in dark mode and with only focus on the directions and nearby turns. You will have the ETA time at the bottom of the screen.

Google claims using this mode will have a significant impact on the phone’s battery life without actually giving the numbers.

Google Maps Power-Saving Mode: Not For Everyone?

While the feature looks quite useful, Google is limiting its support to the latest Pixel 10 models which means people using the Pixel 8 or 9 phones will not get the upgrade. The company is offering the new mode by default and it is activated when you switch the device to power saving mode. However, you can manually enable it by pressing the power button of the Pixel 10, 10 Pro or the 10 Pro XL model.

We’re not sure why Google has limited this feature to just the new Pixel devices and not the recent ones, but we are hoping that other brands can adopt the option into their own software for the devices gradually.

Google Maps is the popular choice among users in India and other countries and a recent update brought more features to the app. Gemini AI is finally available in the app for users, along with more road-focused updates like speed limit alert, informing about accident prone areas and more.
