Star India all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy has been released from the Test team ahead of the two-match series against South Africa and is all set to play for India A in the three-match ODI series against South Africa A, according to a report by India Today.

Reddy, who had joined the Indian Test team’s training camp at Eden Gardens ahead of the clash against the reigning World Test champions, was released midway through practice.

According to the report, the decision is believed to have been made once it became evident he would not be part of the playing XI for the opening Test.

As per team sources quoted by India Today, Reddy flew to Rajkot earlier this week to join the India A team, where he is all set to feature in the List A games against the visiting South Africa A side.

The move is intended to help Reddy regain form and match fitness after a few injury-plagued months.

India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate confirmed Reddy’s omission during the pre-match press conference on November 12, suggesting that Dhruv Jurel would feature in the playing XI.

Jurel’s brilliant form and consistent performances made his selection an easy call for the management, leading to Reddy’s release.

The star Indian all-rounder’s progress has been hampered by a series of injuries in recent months. He missed the first three T20Is against Australia because of a left quadriceps injury sustained during the ODI series in Adelaide.

Although Reddy later regained fitness, recurring neck spasms hindered his complete recovery, disrupting his rhythm and limiting his game time even after returning to training.

Once regarded as one of India’s most promising Test all-rounders, Reddy will now focus on regaining his form and rhythm with India A. His release helps the senior side refine their balance as well, with Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel available as established all-round options for the Test series.
