Maharashtra, for instance, currently operates five international airports — in Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Shirdi and Navi Mumbai. However, the newly constructed Navi Mumbai International Airport is yet to commence international flight operations, which is expected to begin from December 2025.
Nonetheless, at present, the only state in India that operates international flights from four airports is Kerala, which are located in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Kozhikode, and Kannur. The achievement highlights Kerala’s growing global connectivity, supported by its thriving tourism industry, strong trade links, and a large expatriate community, particularly in the Gulf region. With the following four international airports in operation, Kerala has set a benchmark for regional air connectivity and global outreach in India’s growing aviation sector.

Trivandrum International Airport
Established in 1932, Trivandrum International Airport is the oldest airport in Kerala and one of the earliest in India. Located in the state capital, it serves a diverse mix of passengers including diplomats, tourists, and officials. The airport also plays a crucial role in supporting key institutions such as the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Technopark, enhancing the region’s administrative and technological landscape.
Cochin International Airport
Cochin International Airport, inaugurated in 1999, is Kerala’s busiest and most globally connected hub. It offers direct links to Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. The airport is also a global pioneer in sustainability, being the world’s first fully solar-powered airport. Over the years, it has become a central gateway for international travel and cargo movement in South India.

Calicut International Airport
Located in the Malabar region, Calicut International Airport primarily serves Gulf-bound travellers. It plays a vital role in Kerala’s expatriate-driven economy, handling significant passenger and cargo traffic between India and West Asia. The airport also supports the region’s trade in food exports and pilgrimage travel, making it an essential lifeline for many families across continents.
Kannur International Airport
Commissioned in 2018, Kannur International Airport is the newest addition to Kerala’s aviation map. It has significantly improved connectivity for the northern districts of Kannur, Kasaragod, and Wayanad. The airport is rapidly emerging as a hub for tourism, business, and global trade, further strengthening Kerala’s position in India’s aviation sector.
