Under Dinesh Karthik, Team India lost three straight Hong Kong Sixes matches to UAE, Kuwait, and Nepal.
India’s squad for Hong Kongs Sixes
Under the leadership of Dinesh Karthik, Team India kicked off their Hong Kong Sixes campaign with a 2-run win (via DLS) on November 7. But the following day turned out to be humiliating for them as they suffered three straight defeats – to UAE, Kuwait and Nepal.
India possessed big names like Robin Uthappa, Priyank Panchal, Abhimanyu Mithun, Stuart Binny, Shahbaz Nadeem, Bharat Chipli, and the skipper himself, Dinesh Karthik. But the veteran stars failed to leave a mark and were eventually knocked out of the tournament.
Saturday began day began with a shocker for India as they endured a 27-run loss to Kuwait. Opting to bowl first, India had no answers to Yasin Patel’s onslaught. The Kuwait batter smashed an unbeaten 58 off just 14 balls, including five consecutive sixes in the final over, powering his team to 106/5 in 6 overs. In reply, India stumbled early and could only manage 79/6 in 5.4 overs despite a late cameo from Abhimanyu Mithun (26 off 9).
Things went from bad to worse as India went down to the UAE by 4 wickets just hours later. Mithun (50) and Dinesh Karthik (42) helped India post a fighting 107/3, but the UAE batters came out blazing. Khalid Shah and Saghir Khan smashed 42 runs in the first two overs, setting up a comfortable chase. UAE reached 111/2 in 5.5 overs to hand India their second straight defeat.
The misery didn’t end there. In the final match of the day, Nepal — not exactly a cricket powerhouse — thrashed India by 92 runs. Nepal posted a record 137/0 in 6 overs, the highest total of the tournament, and India folded for just 45. A day to forget for the Men in Blue.
India will now lock horns with Sri Lanka on Sunday.
