Kedarnath Yatra halted after landslide blocks trek route, over 2,000 pilgrims stranded amid heavy rains

The Kedarnath Yatra has been temporarily stopped as landslides triggered by heavy rainfall has blocked a trek route to the pilgrimage site.

The landslide occurred on Wednesday, July 30, near Munkatiya, on a trek route which leads to the Kedarnath temple, reported news agency PTI.

This left about 2,000 pilgrims stranded in Gaurikund region, as per Rudraprayag Police.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Uttarakhand’s State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have started working on their rescue to safer sides. “They are being brought safely to Sonprayag,” Akshay Prahlad Konde, Superintendent of Police (SP) of Rudraprayag Police said, as per PTI.

“Around 50 to 70 metres of the road between Munkatiya and Gaurikund has been completely washed out. An alternative pedestrian route which was being used is also broken,” Konde said in a video statement shared by the Uttarakhand Police on X (formerly Twitter).

“As the quantity of landslide debris is huge, it will take two to three days for the path to become smooth,” Konde added.

He added that the update on the opening of the road and resuming of the yatra will be shared through social media handles of the police.
