Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted the Indian women’s team, which won the ICC Women’s World Cup, at his residence at Lok Kalyan Marg on Wednesday. The video of their meeting was released on social media on Thursday.

Deepti Sharma, who was named the ‘Player of the Tournament’ with 215 runs and 22 wickets, including a fifty and a five-wicket haul in the final against South Africa, expressed her eagerness to meet the Prime Minister. She recalled their meeting in 2017 when PM Modi urged them to work hard to achieve their dreams. PM Modi mentioned Deepti’s Instagram post ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and her tattoo of Lord Hanuman, which she said gives her strength. Harmanpreet asked PM Modi how he manages to stay in the present, to which he replied that it has become a part of his life and a habit.

“You have a tattoo of Lord Hanuman – how does it help you?” PM Modi asked.

“I have more faith in him than in myself, and that helps me a lot personally in improving my game,” Deepti replied.

What Happened When PM Modi Met India’s World Cup-Winning Team?

PM Modi congratulated the team on their victory and praised their remarkable comeback in the tournament after facing three consecutive defeats and social media trolling. The players presented him with a signed jersey with ‘Namo 1’ printed on it. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president, Mithun Manhas, was also present.

Captain Harmanpreet Kaur reminisced about meeting the Prime Minister in 2017 after a narrow loss to England in the finals at Lord’s, stating that they met him without the trophy then, but now they have met him with the trophy and hope to meet him more often. Vice Captain Smriti Mandhana, who was the second-highest run-getter in the tournament with 434 runs in nine innings, including a century and two fifties, said that PM Modi had motivated them and has been an inspiration. She also mentioned how girls are excelling in various fields today, attributing it to PM Modi.

The Prime Minister also recalled Harleen Deol’s famous catch in 2021 against England during a T20I in the UK, which he had posted about on social media. PM Modi discussed how Harmanpreet kept the ball after the final match. She said she was fortunate the ball came to her, so she kept it. He also mentioned Amanjot Kaur’s now-famous catch to dismiss South African skipper Laura Wolvaardt after several fumbles. Amanjot said she likes this fumble, to which PM Modi added that while catching, she must have seen the ball, but after the catch, she must have seen the trophy.

Young pacer Kranti Gaud, who took nine wickets in eight matches, mentioned her brother is a big fan of PM Modi, and the Prime Minister immediately extended an open invitation for them to meet.
