Former Australia all-rounder Shane Watson has backed Shubman Gill to find his rhythm across formats, calling the India captain “ridiculously talented” and capable of quickly adapting his game to different conditions.

Gill, who’s leading India in Tests and ODIs, has endured a quiet run in the ongoing white-ball series against Australia with scores of 10, 9 and 24 in the ODIs and 37, 5, and 15* in the T20Is so far.

But Watson isn’t worried.

“It does take time (to make adjustments), and it’s through trial and error that you really realise exactly what you need to do,” Watson said ahead of the fourth T20I on Thursday.

“But Shubman is a ridiculously talented batter. He’s got an amazing technique. It’s not going to take him long at all to really navigate his way through the formats.”

Watson admitted that switching between formats is never easy, but believes Gill’s class will shine through once he settles into a rhythm.

“It definitely is a challenge, and the more you do it, the better you get at making those little adjustments — in technique, game plan, and mindset — to become the best version of yourself every time,” he added.

The former Aussie star also reserved glowing praise for Abhishek Sharma, India’s explosive T20 opener, who’s made waves with his fearless hitting.

“He is an absolute treat to watch. He’s incredibly good, isn’t he? So fearless,  but with the skill to adapt to whatever’s required,” Watson said.

“It’s been special to see his evolution over the last few years. He’s got all the gears, all the shots against any bowler in any condition.”

Abhishek, a key player in India’s Asia Cup triumph, has impressed again against Australia with scores of 19, 68, and 25 so far.
