Indian women’s cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur and her father Harmandar’s embrace after she led the side to a historic ODI World Cup title has gone viral on social media. The Indian women’s team under Harmanpreet’s captaincy defeated South Africa by 52 runs in the final on Sunday, November 2, to win its first-ever global trophy.
India’s first World Cup-winning women’s team captain, Harmanpreet, would love to believe in the power of sport after being the first among equals.
What struck with Harmanpreet was the collective calm inside, within the team, amidst cumulative chaos on the outside. But on Sunday, she gave way to all emotions and an adorable moment with her father has gone viral on social media.
Harmandar lifted Harmanpreet and hugged her tightly, in a beautiful father-daughter moment, with him shining with pride. Watch the video here:
“I bought that t-shirt out of joy for becoming a father to a girl. But I knew that she would become a sportsperson. She played hockey and was into athletics, too. When she started playing cricket, she developed a passion for the game,” Harmandar had earlier told The Indian Express as to how he bought a ‘good batsman’ printed t-shirt when Harmanpreet was born.
And when the Indian captain spoke at the post-match presentation, she never lost sight of the bigger picture, what it meant to be the first women’s team to achieve the unthinkable.
“This is the start. We wanted to break this barrier and our next plan is to make this a habit. We were waiting for it and now this moment has come. So many big occasions are coming and we want to keep improving,” Harmanpreet said.
The Indian skipper was echoing the coach’s sentiment of creating a bubble within the team and not caring about the outside frenzy.
