West Indies bounced back from a slow start to defeat Bangladesh by 16 runs in the opening match of the three-game Twenty20 series on Monday.

A late surge from captain Shai Hope and Rovman Powell, scoring 51 runs in the last three overs, propelled the West Indies to a formidable total of 165/3.

Bangladesh was bowled out for 149 in 19.4 overs, suffering due to reckless batting by the specialists. Jason Holder took 3/31, while fellow fast bowler Jayden Seales cleaned up the tail, claiming 3/32.

Hope won the toss and opted to bat on what he described as a batting-friendly pitch. However, openers Brandon King and Alick Athanaze managed only 36 runs in the powerplay, struggling against Nasum Ahmed’s spin. Although Nasum did not take any wickets, he conceded just 15 runs in his four overs.

Leg-spinner Rishad Hossain made the breakthrough by dismissing Athanaze for 36, ending a 59-run partnership with King.

Fast bowler Taskin Ahmed then struck twice in consecutive deliveries, including dismissing King for 33 off 36 balls.

Hope anchored the innings and, along with Powell, excelled in the death overs. Hope hit three consecutive sixes in the 22-run last over, contributing 28-ball 46, while Powell scored 44 off 28 balls. Their unbeaten 83 off 46 deliveries laid the foundation for victory.

Bangladesh’s Tanzid Hasan started aggressively, hitting left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein for a four and six in the first over, but was dismissed in the second over. Four of Bangladesh’s top five batters were out within the next 25 deliveries, leaving the hosts at 57/5 in the ninth over.

Towhid Hridoy attempted to stabilise the innings but was dismissed for 28 by a slow bouncer from Seales.

The lower order put up a fight, with Tanzim Hasan Sakib scoring a team-best 33, but the damage had been done.

The second match is scheduled for Wednesday.
