Even at 77, veteran actor, classical dancer and politician Hema Malini continues to impress with her energy, grace and radiant appearance. She attributes her wellness to a disciplined lifestyle, simple diet and mindful habits instead of costly routines.
In an interview, she shared details of her daily routine, diet and fitness practices that keep her healthy and active.
Hema Malini’s approach to health focuses on regular exercise, balanced eating, fasting and mental wellness. Her lifestyle shows that consistency, simplicity and balance are key to staying fit and energetic at any age.
Morning Rituals To Start The Day
Hema begins her mornings calmly and positively. She starts with a cup of saffron-infused milk tea and a few light biscuits, limiting herself to just two cups of tea a day.
For breakfast, she prefers light, traditional meals such as idlis or fruits. Sundays are her comfort days, when she enjoys homemade paneer parathas with plain curd, a combination that balances taste and nutrition.
Fasting For Wellness And Peace
Twice a week, Hema observes fasts on Mondays and Fridays, dedicating them to Lord Shiva and Goddess Durga. On these days, she consumes minimal, sattvic foods such as paneer, bananas and fresh juice, breaking her fast early in the evening. She believes fasting helps her remain mentally calm and physically active.
Homemade Vegetarian Food
Hema prefers home-cooked meals over eating out. Her plate usually includes simple dishes like rasam, kadhi, and lightly cooked vegetables. She enjoys exploring South Indian, Gujarati, and North Indian vegetarian cuisines, while keeping them light and nutritious.
Discipline In Diet
Coming from a traditional Iyengar family, Hema follows a strict vegetarian lifestyle. She avoids non-vegetarian food and favours boiled, steamed, or low-oil preparations. She also never mixes rice and chapati in a single meal to avoid feeling heavy.
“When I am shooting, I carry my own lunch from home. We have a cook who makes food according to his style, but we like South Indian food, so thoda-bahut rasam bana leta hai (so he makes a little bit of rasam),” she had told The Telegraph.
Fitness Through Balance
Hema’s fitness routine includes yoga, dance, meditation and regular fasting. She believes wellness is about balance, devotion and joy, not strict diets or trends. Her simple, disciplined lifestyle has helped her stay energetic, healthy and glowing over the years.
