The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has found itself in yet another controversy involving PSL franchise Multan Sultan owner Ali Khan Tareen. The PCB has sent a legal notice to Tareen, threatening to “blacklist” him unless he issues a public apology for his criticism of the league’s management.

The Multan Sultans franchise revealed in a statement that the PCB’s ultimatum came in the form of a legal notice, which accused Tareen of violating several clauses of the 10-year franchise agreement and demanded a retraction of his remarks.

Over the past year, Tareen has been vocal about his dissatisfaction with the PSL’s management, citing a lack of communication and transparency, particularly regarding the rebidding process and the proposed inclusion of two new teams next season. The PCB’s legal threat prompted Tareen to issue a video response on the social media platform X.

In the video, Tareen summarised the PCB’s demands before criticising the board’s approach to handling disagreements.

“If you were more competent, you would know these matters aren’t handled this way,” Tareen said.

He accused PSL officials of being surrounded by “yes-men” and unwilling to accept constructive criticism, stressing that “the league belongs to the fans and to all of Pakistan, not to the handful of people currently running it.”

While his legal advisors advised against an apology, Tareen proceeded with a mock one “for the sake of improving the PSL.” He further reiterated his earlier criticisms — for showing frustration at mismanagement, for calling out unprofessional conduct, and even for criticising the opening ceremony, where he sarcastically praised the ‘amazing’ lip-syncing by performers. He continued in the same tone, apologising for being “10 minutes late” to a Zoom meeting and for pointing out logistical flaws during the tournament.

Following the biting sarcasm, Tareen concluded dramatically by tearing up the legal notice, saying with a smirk, “I hope you like my apology video.”
