Sindh Governor (R) lauds Mohsin Naqvi (L) for ‘stealing’ Asia Cup trophy
The Pakistan cricket team was thrashed by India thrice in the Asia Cup 2025, including the all-important final. Yet, instead of focusing on the team’s failures, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi has drawn attention for his controversial decision to deny India the trophy. As a key figure in the Pakistani government, Naqvi’s actions have been lauded by several politicians and officials, turning an embarrassing episode into a show of national pride.
In a video going viral on social media, Kamran Tessori, Governor of Sindh, can be heard lauding Naqvi for denying India the Asia Cup trophy. The former branded the Indian cricketers as terrorists, adding that the Asia Cricket Council (ACC) chief has forced the Indians to run after him for the silverware.
“When he was standing on the ground and the Indian team was not taking the trophy, he demonstrated patience and kept standing. They (the Indian team) wanted him to step aside and let someone else take it. But they did not know that our chairman is also the Interior Minister,” Tessori said.
“Unhone team ko baad mein dehshat gardon ki tarah handle kiya (He then handled the team like terrorists. He (Naqvi) put the trophy in the car and took it away with him.”
“Ab poora India trophy ke peeche bhag raha hai (Now, the whole of India is chasing the trophy),” he added.
Interestingly, Naqvi kept on smirking when the Sindh governor termed the Indian cricketers ‘terrorists’, lauding his act of taking away the trophy with him.
Throughout the tournament, the Indian team management had made it clear that they would not accept the trophy from Naqvi, who also serves as Pakistan’s Interior Minister.
During the post-match presentation, Naqvi waited on the podium for the Indian players to collect their medals and the Asia Cup trophy. But when the team didn’t turn up, he eventually left the venue with the trophy still in hand. In response, Suryakumar Yadav and his teammates marked their victory by celebrating with an imaginary trophy — a gesture that quickly went viral and ignited a storm of reactions on social media.
