Star India batter Rohit Sharma’s failure on his comeback in Perth has not only raised questions about his form but also reignited discussions around Yashasvi Jaiswal’s omission. The young Mumbai opener, who made his ODI debut earlier this year against England in Nagpur, has not featured since, as Rohit and Shubman Gill continue to cement their place as India’s preferred opening pair.

Meanwhile, the duo from Mumbai were spotted having a candid chat ahead of the second ODI in Adelaide. Rohit took Jaiswal’s bat, did some shadow practice and in between, offered some tips to the future star.

While Gill has recently been appointed the captain of India’s ODI team, doubt looms over Rohit’s place in the team, given his age. The former captain is currently 38 and will be 40 by the time Team India gets into the ODI World Cup 2027 in South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe. If the team management wishes to move over Rohit, then Jaiswal would be the one in line to replace him. However, the 23-year-old has to wait for his chance.

India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak attended the pre-match press conference in Adelaide on Wednesday, and during the presser, he was asked about the possibility of Jaiswal getting a chance to play at Adelaide Oval.

While Kotak didn’t straightaway rule out Jaiswal’s selection, he did hint that the star batter, who made his ODI debut on February 6, 2025, against England in Nagpur, has to wait for his chance.

“I think he’s in the squad, in the practice, and they (other youngsters) are pretty much aware that their turn will come, and they prepare well. At the end of the day, only 11 can play, so you have to wait for your turn and then perform,” Kotak said.
