A couple has achieved remarkable financial success by turning an initial investment of Rs 2 million into over Rs 10 million in just four years. Sharing their journey on Reddit, their story has gone viral, garnering praise for their pragmatic approach to saving and investing without relying on high income or taking substantial risks.
The 29-year-old husband and 31-year-old wife had accumulated assets worth over Rs 11 million by September 2025, surpassing their original target of January 2026.
Channel Earnings Into Savings
Starting with just Rs 2 million rupees in 2021, they employed a simple strategy: controlling expenses and directing increasing earnings into savings. Initially, their annual expenses were only Rs 6,00,000. Despite maintaining a frugal lifestyle, they enjoyed life, taking 2-3 domestic trips and one international trip annually.
Even after their child was born in 2024, their yearly expenses remained below Rs 14 lakh, demonstrating that happiness can be maintained within a budget.
Currently, the couple earns between Rs 260,000 to Rs 280,000 per month, with no EMI, a simple car, and a rented house costing only Rs 300,000 annually. They have government medical insurance and a life insurance cover of Rs 15 million. They do not own personal property and have not included ancestral property in their assets.
Inside The Investment Process
Their investment portfolio is diverse: Rs 4.1 million in mutual funds, direct equity, and ETFs; Rs 1.7 million in PPF and other debt instruments; Rs 1.48 million in NPS; Rs 660,000 in EPF; Rs 650,000 in gold and silver, which have appreciated in value; Rs 700,000 to Rs 800,000 in liquid savings; and Rs 8 million to Rs 10 million in fixed deposits and loans to family and friends.
Aim Set At Rs 1 Crore
The couple’s goal of achieving financial independence and early retirement (FIRE) was realised earlier than planned, partly due to the rise in gold and silver prices. They are now adjusting their portfolio, increasing the equity portion from 45 percent to 60 percent, and they review their investments 2-3 times a year to stay on track.
In a Reddit post, they wrote, “Our life is not about miserliness. We travel, celebrate festivals, but consciously avoid escalating lifestyle expenses. Follow the method that works and invest consistently. FIRE is not just a goal—it’s a path to future financial independence.”
This couple’s story serves as an inspiration for anyone looking to start saving. By controlling expenses, investing wisely, and being patient, financial dreams can be fulfilled.
