History and Significance of Muhurat Trading

Muhurat trading is a long-standing Diwali tradition first introduced by the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) in 1957, and later adopted by the National Stock Exchange (NSE) in 1992.

Historically, brokers performed Chopda Pujan, a ritualistic worship of account books, during this auspicious hour to mark the beginning of the new financial year with prosperity and good fortune.

Market Outlook: Optimism and Sector Rotation in Focus

Experts anticipate a buoyant Muhurat session, with indices expected to stay in the green amid festive cheer and strong investor sentiment. “As we move into Samvat 2082, market sentiment remains firmly positive. Muhurat trading traditionally sees a buying bias as investors initiate long-term positions. Sectors such as consumption, autos, infrastructure, IT, and banking are likely to attract the most interest,” said Kranthi Bathini, Director of Equity Strategy at WealthMill Securities.

Bathini added that sustaining Nifty above 25,850 and Sensex above 84,350 would be crucial for an extended uptrend.

Independent analyst Ambreesh Baliga echoed this optimism, stating,“Samvat 2082 could outperform the previous year as earnings recovery is likely from the next quarter. Consumption, FMCG, automobiles, BFSI, and specialty chemicals will lead the rally. While new highs are expected soon, a major breakout may come by January 2026, potentially taking Nifty beyond 28,000.”

Meanwhile, Ajit Mishra, Senior Vice President of Research at Religare Broking, said,“As Nifty approaches 26,000, some consolidation is possible before a fresh breakout. The overall bias remains positive, with immediate support at 25,650 and major support near 25,450. We recommend a ‘buy on dips’ strategy focusing on large-cap and quality midcap stocks.”

Trading Strategy for Muhurat Session

  • Preferred Sectors: Consumption, Automobiles, Banks & Financial Services, IT, Infrastructure, Specialty Chemicals
  • Investor Approach: Focus on high-quality large caps and structurally strong midcaps
  • Sentiment: Bullish but disciplined — experts recommend staggered buying instead of aggressive lump-sum investments

Outlook for Samvat 2082

With optimism surrounding earnings recovery, robust domestic demand, and festive tailwinds, this year’s Muhurat trading is expected to set a positive tone for Samvat 2082.

Investors are likely to enter with a long-term wealth creation mindset, reaffirming confidence in India’s growth story and the markets’ potential to scale new highs.
