India vs England Test series ended in a 2-2 draw
The first edition of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy ended in a 2-2 draw, but there is much more beyond the scoreline. A young Indian team, without the stalwarts like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin, that fought bravely and refused to give up, a 25-year-old young man who scored centuries in 3 different cities of England and set a plethora of runs and a fragile bowling attack that did the most damage in the absence of their MVP, Jasprit Bumrah.
Precisely, it was a historic series with Indian batters stealing the show and bowlers passing the litmus test. As Team India with happy faces, let’s have a look at the records shattered in the last 45 days.
Most runs in an India vs England Test series: Shubman Gill scored 754 runs in five Tests against England, which is a record for scoring the most runs in a Test series played between India and England. He went past Graham Gooch’s tally of 752 runs in three matches of the 1990 series.
Most runs for India as captain in a Test series: Shubman Gill’s tally of 754 runs helped him break Sunil Gavaskar’s record (732 vs West Indies in 1978-79) of most runs for India in a Test series as captain. Only Don Bradman of Australia has scored more runs in a Test series (810) as captain than Gill.
1st batter to score 700 runs in a series in SENA Countries: Shubman Gill is the first batter from Asia to score 700 runs in a Test series played in SENA countries. The previous best was Virat Kohli (692 runs in Australia, 2014-15 series).
Highest individual score by an Indian captain in a Test: Shubman Gill scored 269 runs in the first innings of the 2nd Test played at Edgbaston, which helped him break Virat Kohli’s record of the highest individual score (254 vs South Africa in 2019) as captain for India in Tests.
1st captain from Asia to score a double century in SENA countries: Shubman Gill became the first Asian captain to score a double century in a Test match played in SENA countries. The previous best score was 193 by Tillakaratne Dilshan (vs England at Lord’s in 2011).
Most runs in a Test match by an Away batter: Shubman Gill scored 430 (269+161) runs in the second Test, which helped him break the record for scoring the most runs in a Test match played away from home. The previous best was Mark Taylor of Australia (426 vs Pakistan in Peshawar, 1998).
1st English captain to take 5-fer and score a 100 in a same Test match: Ben Stokes became the first England captain—and only the fifth in Test history—to score a century and bag a five-wicket haul in the same match. He is the fifth overall to achieve this feat after Denis Atkinson, Garry Sobers of the West Indies and former Pakistan cricketers Mushtaq Mohammad and Imran Khan.
First Indian stumper to score a century in both innings of a Test match: Indian vice-captain Rishabh Pant had a terrific start to the tour. He smashed twin centuries in the first Test against England at Headingley and became the first Indian wicketkeeper to score two centuries in a single Test match.
The legacy of Joe Root: Joe Root stamped his authority as England’s finest Test batter during the 5-match series against India. With 3 centuries and a fifty, he piled up 537 runs, taking his career tally to 13,543—surpassing Dravid, Kallis, and Ponting to become the second-highest run-getter in Test history, behind only Sachin Tendulkar.
Root also became the first player to score 6000 runs in the World Test Championship and now holds the record for the most Test centuries at home (10) against a single team—India. His total Test centuries stand at 39.
Bumrah – 1st Asian to pick 150 wickets in SENA Nations: Jasprit Bumrah became the first Asian bowler to claim 150 Test wickets in SENA countries—South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia. He achieved this milestone in his 32nd Test in these nations, reaching the landmark during the first Test against England at Headingley with a five-wicket haul in the first innings. He took just 61 innings to get there, surpassing iconic names like Wasim Akram and Anil Kumble.
7000-plus runs in the series: The Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy turned out to be a run-fest, with over 7000 runs scored across the five Tests—only the second time in history after the 1993 Ashes (7221 runs). India alone piled up 3809 runs, the second-highest by a team in a Test series, behind Australia’s 3877 in the 1989 Ashes. Adding to the records, India hammered 470 boundaries—the most ever in a single Test series.
Smallest and biggest victories for India: India’s 6-run victory is their slimmest margin of victory ever in a Test match. Earlier in the second Test at Edgbaston, India defeated England by 336 runs, which was their biggest away victory in Tests in terms of margin of runs.
