Mohammad Siraj stunned the Perth crowd on Sunday with a jaw-dropping effort, saving 5 runs against Australia in the first ODI. India struggled big time in the series opener as they managed just 136 runs after the game was reduced to 26 overs per side due to multiple rain interruptions. While the batters disappointed, Siraj’s insane efforts near the boundary line were one big positive for India in the game.

It was the 18th over when Matthew Renshaw hammered Washington Sundar over for a six over long-off, but Siraj had other plans. The pacer leapt up to grab it with both hands high above his head. However, as he was falling backwards, he threw the ball back into the field of play while still in mid-air.

But Siraj’s terrific attempt to save runs went in vain as India lost the first ODI by 7 wickets.

India’s innings never took off in the rain-curtailed 26-over ODI at Perth, managing only 136 for 9. Rohit Sharma (8) and Virat Kohli (0) fell cheaply to the Australian pace duo of Hazlewood and Starc, while Shubman Gill (10) and Shreyas Iyer (5) also failed to convert starts. KL Rahul (38) and Axar Patel (31) offered brief resistance, adding 39 runs for the fifth wicket before India lost momentum again.

Australia, chasing a DLS target of 131, eased to victory in 21.1 overs.

The Indian pacers — Arshdeep, Mohammad Siraj and Harshit Rana — could not replicate the control of their Australian counterparts, offering plenty of freebies to the hosts’ batters. Marsh fed on them with glee, crunching six each of all three. An inside-out smash off Siraj over covers was the highlight.

Philippe gave his captain ample support with a busy knock, and his dismissal was a minor irritant in Australia’s march, which culminated in them taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
