During the fifth and final India-England Test, players from both teams break multiple batting, bowling, and fielding records.

Here’s a look at major records broken during the 5th India-England Test at The Oval:

  • The win by six runs at The Oval is India’s narrowest win by runs in Test cricket. India’s previous smallest win by runs in Tests was by 13 runs against the Australian team in November 2004 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
  • Mohammed Siraj dismissed nine English batters in the fifth Test, which helped him extend his tally of wickets to 23 in the series. With 23 wickets in five matches, Siraj equalled Bumrah’s record of taking the most wickets for India in a Test series played in England. In India’s tour of England in 2021-22, Bumrah also played five matches and picked up 23 wickets.
  • Joe Root became the first player in the world to score 6000 runs in the World Test Championship.
  • Root also became the first player in the world to score 500+ runs in a Test series against India three times. During their playing days, Everton Weekes, Garry Sobers, Zaheer Abbas, Ricky Ponting, and Younis Khan twice scored 500+ runs in a Test series against India.
  • Root became the first player in the world to score 24 centuries in home Tests. Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis, and Mahela Jayawardene are in second place with 23 centuries in home Tests.
  • Root became only the second batter after Don Bradman to score 2000+ runs in home Tests against one team. Bradman finished his career with 2354 runs in 18 Tests against England in Australia, whereas Root has 2111 runs to his credit in 20 Tests against India in England.
  • Root became the first English batter to score 13 Test centuries against one team. During his playing days, Jack Hobbs scored 12 Test centuries for England against Australia. Only Don Bradman has scored more Test centuries (19 vs England) against one team than Root now.
  • Root has 7329 runs to his name in 84 Tests played so far in England, which is more than Sachin Tendulkar’s tally of 7126 Test runs in India. Only Ponting (7578 runs in 92 matches) has scored more runs in home Tests than Root now.
  • Shubman Gill broke Graham Gooch’s record of scoring the most runs in a Test series played between India and England. Gill scored 21 and 11 runs in two innings of the Oval Test, which helped him take his tally of runs to 754. Gooch played three Tests against India in 1990 and scored 752 runs.
  • During his 21-run knock in the first innings, Gill broke Sunil Gavaskar’s record of scoring the most runs in a Test series for India as captain. Gavaskar played six Tests against the West Indies in 1978-79 as captain and scored 732 runs.
  • Ravindra Jadeja scored 53 runs from 77 balls in the second innings of the Oval Test. Jadeja finished the series with six 50+ scores in five matches. He is the first player to score six 50+ scores in a Test series played between India and England.
  • India scored 224 runs in the first innings of the fifth Test and 396 in the second. A total of 620 runs at The Oval helped the Indian team take their tally of runs to 3809 in the series, which is a record for the most runs by any team in a five-match Test series. Only Australia has scored more (3877 in six matches of the 1993 Ashes series).
  • During his 53-run knock in the second innings, Jadeja took his tally of runs past the 500-mark in the ongoing series. For the first time in history, three Indian batters have scored more than 500 runs in a Test series.
  • Siraj dismissed four English batters in the first innings and five in the second. He is the first Asian bowler to dismiss at least four batters seven times in an innings of Test matches played in England.
  • Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett added 92 runs for the first wicket in 1st innings and 50 runs for the first innings in 2nd innings. They have added 50+ runs for the first wicket against India nine times in Tests now, which is one more than Desmond Haynes and Gordon Greenidge’s tally of 8.
  • Crawley and Duckett also became second opening pair in the world after Haynes and Greenidge to add more than 1000 runs as openers in Tests against India.
  • Akash Deep scored 66 runs for India in the second innings after coming out to bat at No. 4 as nightwatchman. He is the third Indian after Syed Kirmani (101* vs Australia in 1979) and Amit Mishra (50 vs Bangladesh in 2010, 84 vs England in 2011) to score fifty as nightwatchman.
