Captaincy transitions in India are never not controversial, or at least worrisome for the fans of the sport in the country. It’s a huge job to lead the national team for the favorite sport of millions of people. No matter how grounded you are mentally, everything changes when you either take over or are removed from captaincy.

Anything like that, at least for now, doesn’t seem to have happened with India’s latest ODI captain, Shubman Gill, and his predecessor, Rohit Sharma. Both have been good in front of the camera on the field and on Sunday, they looked like two best friends off the field too, when cameras in Perth’s Optus Stadium caught them munching on some popcorn and laughing in what was almost an hour-long chat.

It was during one of the many rain breaks on the first ODI between India and Australia. The videos and photos of the moments are going viral on social media. Watch some here:

The duo didn’t enjoy the first innings of the match. Rohit was out for 8 (14), edging a good length ball from Josh Hazlewood to the slip cordon, while Gill looked in good touch for his 10 (18), but got stranded down the leg side by Nathan Ellis.

‘No such thing’: Gill on talks of discomfort with Rohit

Before the series began, Gill had directly addressed the topic of the difficult captaincy transition.

“Whatever the narrative might be outside, there has been no such thing between us. It is just like old times. He is very helpful, and he always shares his experiences. I have been asking him for his suggestions. I asked him, ‘What would you have done on this wicket if you were the captain?’ I like to pick the brains of other players,” he told reporters in Perth on Saturday.

“I have a good equation with both Virat and Rohit bhai. I always take their advice, and they are never hesitant when it comes to giving their take,” he added. “First, Mahi (MS Dhoni) bhai, then Virat bhai, and now we’ll carry forward the legacy that Rohit bhai has built. There’s so much experience there. I’ve spoken with both Virat bhai and Rohit bhai about how to take this team forward, what kind of culture we want to maintain, and their experience will be extremely valuable for us,” he said
