Shubman Gill receives grand welcome in Ahmedabad
Shubman Gill, on Thursday, walked out wearing the captain’s blazer for the first time on home soil as India took on West Indies. Though the hosts lost the toss, it turned out to be a good one to lose as Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah went berserk with the ball. The pacers shared 7 wickets among each other to bundle out the visitors to a paltry 162. In reply, India posted 121/2 and were trailing by 41 runs at stumps on the opening day.
West Indies had a couple of successes, managing to dismiss Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan in quick succession. As Gill walked out to accompany Rahul in the middle, the India skipper received a rousing reception from the Ahmedabad crowd. They ran closer to the staircase through which Gill made his way to the field of play, cheering loudly for the Indian captain.
India stamped their authority on the opening day of the first Test against West Indies in Ahmedabad, dismissing the visitors for 162 before reaching 121/2 at stumps.
Mohammed Siraj (4/40) and Jasprit Bumrah (3/32) led a clinical bowling effort, ably supported by Kuldeep Yadav (2/25) and Washington Sundar (1/9). Siraj ripped through the top order with a fiery spell, later producing the ball of the day to dismiss Roston Chase, while Bumrah’s yorkers rattled the tail.
In reply, India’s openers provided a solid platform. Yashasvi Jaiswal started cautiously, taking 37 balls to find his first boundary before racing to 36 with seven fours. However, an ill-timed cut saw him edge to Shai Hope off Jayden Seales.
Sai Sudharsan (7) struggled, surviving a mix-up with KL Rahul before misjudging a pull against Chase and falling lbw. Rahul, however, anchored the innings, compiling a patient unbeaten 53 off 114 balls, with captain Shubman Gill (18*) steady alongside him.
