She spent her early years in the city of Vlore before moving to Canada for a while, and eventually moved to the United States. It was in the US where she completed her higher studies and began her journey in the tech industry.
Personal Life And Work:
Murati, born on December 16, 1988, earned a degree in mathematics from Colby College in the US and a degree in mechanical engineering from Dartmouth College’s Thayer School of Engineering, which she completed in 2012. After finishing her education, she began her career at Zodiac Aerospace, followed by Tesla, where she gained valuable experience in advanced technology. She later joined Leap Motion, now called Ultraleap.
Her most important career move came in 2018 when she joined OpenAI as the Vice President of Applied AI and Partnerships. Just four years later, in 2022, she was promoted to Chief Technology Officer. As CTO, she played a key role in building and launching some of OpenAI’s most powerful tools, ChatGPT, DALL·E, Codex and Sora.
In February 2025, Mira Murati founded her own AI company, Thinking Machines Lab, which focuses on creating useful AI tools for the general public.
