The Bangladesh men’s team could be in for a serious blow to their Asia Cup 2025 hopes as captain Litton Das has reportedly picked up a back injury in training at the International Cricket Council (ICC) Academy Ground on September 22. According to Cricbuzz, Litton felt ‘discomfort’ on the left side of his waist while attempting a square cut. He was assessed by team physio Bayzid ul Islam and withdrew from the session prematurely.
“We will have a look at him (Litton) today because from the outside he looks quite okay, but we need to conduct a medical assessment before making a final call,” the website quoted a Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) official as saying.
Bangladesh would hope the injury isn’t serious and Litton can recover for their Super Four clash against India on Wednesday, September 24. The Tigers started the tournament slowly and barely made it through the group stage, but showed their best form by beating Sri Lanka in the first Super Four clash.
Litton is seen as an influential leader, while also being important at the top of the order, especially against slightly over-matched sides like India. Bangladesh also didn’t name a vice-captain for the tournament, so it remains unclear who would captain the team if he were to be ruled out.
Further, there’s no break between Bangladesh’s Super Four matches against India and Pakistan. Bangladesh face the Men in Green and staunch rivals on Thursday, which means even if Litton is out for a couple of days, a lot of changes, including a different captain and opener, would be afoot for the two toughest tests. India, especially, are the favorites and the only unbeaten team so far in the tournament.
Bangladesh need to win at least one of these games to have a chance at qualifying for the final of the tournament. More clarity could be expected when the team sends its representative for the pre-match press conference.
