Apple’s design team shares the idea behind the new iPhone Air

Apple introduced the iPhone Air earlier this week during the iPhone 17 launch event, where Tim Cook and Co. had a lot to share about the device and what it brings to the table. Now, Apple chief Cook has been quizzed further about the new sleek iPhone model, and its origin. Speaking in an interview with WSJ, Cook and a few other executives shared their views on the design of iPhone Air and its purpose.

The Idea Of Going Slim

Cook set the platform for two of the more involved executives, Molly Anderson VP of Industrial Design and Alan Dye VP of Human Interface Design, who were quoted explaining the blueprint that conceived the iPhone Air. “It’s something that we dreamed about for a long time,” Anderson said, “to make just an incredibly, shockingly thin iPhone,” Anderson was quoted saying.

It is interesting to see Apple talk about iPhones being thin, and light, something that has not been offered with the earlier iPhone models. This probably explains why Apple decided against calling iPhone 17 Air, and let it blossom in a new avatar.

Dye claims Apple plans to fulfill the ambitions of Steve Jobs, who back in the day talked about making a device with a single piece of glass and that vision seems to have come to fruition after all these years. However, there is a serious feeling that Apple’s focus on a thin iPhone is directed at its eventual ambition to make a sleek and creaseless foldable.

In fact, Cook was asked about this trajectory, to which he was quoted saying, “We’re really good at keeping secrets.” And that statement should be good enough to build up for the big 2026 that most reports have hinted.

The launch of iPhone Air and 17 Pro is surely going to have buyers in a dilemma and that seems to have been its aim from day one.

The company could make drastic changes to the iPhone 18 series, which could have a new Air version (or not), but a Fold iPhone is widely tipped to be announced. We did expect some kind of hints about the product at the Apple event this week but we wait for another day.
