India’s Test captain Shubman Gill’s sister Shahneel on Monday posted an adorable birthday message for the former, who turned 26 on the day. He will next feature in the upcoming Asia Cup, all set to begin on Tuesday. He has been named the vice-captain of India’s T20I side as well.
Gill’s appointment as India’s vice-captain for the Asia Cup signals bigger responsibilities on the horizon. Having already entrusted him with the Test leadership, BCCI now seems keen on restoring the one captain model that long defined Indian cricket.
With the Asia Cup kicking off on Tuesday, the subcontinent spectacle is all set to serve as a curtain-raiser for the all-important T20 World Cup six months down the line and while Suryakumar Yadav is expected to take charge at home in 2026, Gill remains poised in the wings.
Meanwhile, Gill celebrated his 26th birthday with the team in Dubai.
“Happiest birthday nikke. Love You always, my lil bully,” Shahneel posted on her Instagram story.
India have been placed in Group A alongside hosts UAE, with their campaign beginning on Wednesday, in Dubai.
The BCCI might not make changes this close to the World Cup, but once the tournament concludes, the board could move to elevate Gill into a leadership role.
“Wishing you a very Happy Birthday, Gill saab 🎂 Here’s to another year of smashing it around the park and raising the bar even higher 🔥,” former India cricketer and Gill’s mentor Yuvraj Singh tweeted on Monday afternoon.
Star India batter KL Rahul posted a hilarious video of Gill sleeping with his mouth open on his Instagram story to wish the latter on his birthday, captioning it “Happy Birthday Stiff”.
