Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh has reportedly contributed steamer boats, sanctioned ambulances, and arranged funds through his network for relief measures in his flood-ravaged home state, Punjab.
Harbhajan, who is also a Member of Parliament in the Indian Upper House, Rajya Sabha, sanctioned eight steamer boats for relief operations through the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Division (MPLAD) funds, which is an annual amount provided to each MP for work in their constituency. In addition, he has chipped in with three steamer boats from his own resources, according to PTI.
“Harbhajan donated 11 steamer boats in all. Eight from his MPLAD fund and three more from his own pocket. Each boat costs around Rs 4.5 to Rs 5.5 lakh. He has also bought three ambulances for smooth transfer of serious patients to nearby hospitals,” the news agency cited an unnamed source on saying at condition of anonymity.
Punjab has been one of the worst-affected states in India, battling a severe flood over the past few weeks. Heavy monsoon rains and breaches in river embankments have led to the displacement of thousands of people and damage to crops. As per some reports, over 40 people have died, with others losing their homes and farms overnight.
Harbhajan has also reached out to his wide circle of friends and well-wishers for support. According to the report, one sporting organisation donated 30 lakh, while two of the cricketer-turned-politician’s close friends contributed Rs 12 lakh and Rs 6 lakh respectively.
“Around Rs 50 lakh has already been collected and donated,” the source mentioned in the report said, adding that essentials like food and medicine are also being regularly supplied to the affected families.
A former Indian spinner of distinction, Harbhajan, has been in the news for a lot of reasons lately. He was one of the first to speak up and ask for India not to play Pakistan in the 2025 Asia Cup in light of the Pahalgam terror attack. More recently, he took to his social media to slam Lalit Modi, the former IPL chairman, who released unseen footage of Harbhajan slapping ex-India teammate Sreesanth during an IPL game in 2008.
