Former Gujarat batter Priyank Panchal has said that Shreyas Iyer has been climbing the leadership ranks for many years now and he should soon get into the scheme of things regularly for the Indian team, adding that he can fill the ‘leadership vacuum’ in the Indian team.
Iyer has been a major topic of discussion ever since he was not named in India’s Asia Cup squad despite a great domestic season and a successful IPL outing as a batter as well as captain.
Iyer’s absence from even the reserve players’ list raised more questions over the selection committee’s decision-making. On Saturday, September 6, he was made the captain of an India A side that would take on Australia A in two four-day games later this month.
“He has already climbed this ladder since many years now. I hope he comes to the main team as early as possible across formats. @ShreyasIyer15 is a great leader and a team player and someone who is ready to take over the leadership vacuum,” Panchal tweeted on Saturday evening.
Iyer, not picked even among the reserves for the Asia Cup starting Tuesday, is turning out for West Zone in the Duleep Trophy semifinal against Central Zone in Bengaluru. He scored only 25 runs and with just one day left of the game, it is highly unlikely he will bat again.
Iyer also bowled four overs, giving away nine runs.
India wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel, who played the fifth Test, has been named Iyer’s deputy in the India A squad.
