Narayan Jagadeesan narrowly missed a well-deserved double century by just three runs as South Zone amassed a formidable first-innings total of 536, despite a lackluster second day in their Duleep Trophy semifinal against North Zone in Bengaluru on Friday.

Beginning the day at 297 for three, South Zone almost batted through the entire second day (88.2 overs), adding only 239 runs and losing the remaining wickets.

Jagadeesan (197 off 352 balls) struck 16 fours and three sixes before being run out. The rest of the South Zone batters didn’t appear to be accelerating the pace but managed to compile an impressive total.

North Zone now has two full days to chase down 537 and secure a spot in the final.

At the start of the day, South Zone skipper Mohammed Azharuddeen (11) was dismissed off the second delivery by India medium pacer Anshul Kamboj (2/67 in 24 overs).

However, Ricky Bhui (54 off 131 balls) and Jagadeesan didn’t increase the scoring rate during their 87-run partnership for the fifth wicket, taking 194 deliveries. Jagadeesan, who added only three boundaries to his overnight 13, was unfortunate when Bhui sold a dummy to the Tamil Nadu keeper-batter.

Bhui pushed a ball towards point for a quick single, and as Jagadeesan sprinted towards the striker’s end, he found Bhui rooted to his crease.

In the post-lunch session, Bhui briefly attacked, hitting off-spinner Sahil Lotra for a four and a six over long-on.

However, when left-arm spinner Nishant Sindhu (5/125 in 47.2 overs) came into the attack, Bhui was dismissed meekly, edging one to rival skipper Ankit Kumar.

Hyderabad spinner Tanay Thyagarajan (58 off 116 balls) then found solid support from Tamil Nadu pacer Gurjapneet Singh (29 off 81 balls) as they added a crucial 63 runs for the eighth wicket, helping South Zone surpass the 500-run mark.

Brief Scores: South Zone 1st Innings 536 in 169.2 overs (Narayan Jagadeesan 197, Tanay Thyagarajan 58, Nishant Sindhu 5/125) vs North Zone
