For fans of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, a new piece of technology has opened the possibility of posing for a selfie with him without ever meeting him in person. Google’s AI research arm DeepMind has unveiled a new image-editing model, ‘Nano Banana’, within its Gemini app. Early demonstrations suggest the tool can generate highly realistic edits while preserving facial details and personal identity with remarkable accuracy.

What sets ‘Nano Banana’ apart is its ability to maintain the subject’s features consistently. Until now, AI editing tools have often stumbled on fine details – smiles that appear unnatural, hairstyles that look distorted, or facial structures that fail to align with the original. This latest model aims to overcome those shortcomings.

The feature is designed for simple use. A person can upload a photo, instruct Gemini to add Shah Rukh Khan next to them, and receive an image that looks convincingly like it was taken at an actual event. The tool can also swap outfits, allowing users to experiment with professional uniforms, retro Bollywood costumes, or casual wear, all while keeping their original face intact.

Another highlight is multi-photo blending. Users can merge their own images with those of their pets to create creative portraits; for example, playing basketball with a dog or enjoying a beach holiday together. The app also supports multi-turn editing, which means users can start with an empty background and gradually add wallpaper, furniture, or decorative objects while retaining the original setup.

Design mixing is also supported. Colours or textures from one object can be applied to another, such as transferring the hues of butterfly wings to a dress or using flower petal textures to design boots. Once the edits are complete, Gemini allows the creation of short videos based on the generated images, further enhancing the experience.

Google has added safeguards to ensure transparency. Every image edited through ‘Nano Banana’ includes a visible watermark along with Google’s invisible SynthID digital watermark, signaling that the photo has been AI-generated.

From walking the red carpet alongside SRK to trying out 70s-inspired hairstyles, Gemini’s ‘Nano Banana’ offers fans and creators a playful yet controlled way to bring imaginative scenarios to life. The update marks another step forward in AI-powered creativity, blurring the lines between reality and digital art while making sure users are aware of the technology behind it.
