Clean electricity production in India has jumped by 20% to fresh highs so far this year, giving utilities a rare chance to cut back on fossil fuel-fired generation and lower dependence on energy imports, Reuters reported.<\/p>\n

According to Reuters citing data from Ember, India\u2019s clean electricity sources are on track to provide one-third of utility power for the first time within the next month, backed by record output from renewables, hydro, and nuclear plants.<\/p>\n

The sharp growth in home-grown clean power comes as India faces unprecedented scrutiny over its energy import practices, especially its reliance on discounted Russian oil, which has drawn stiff new tariffs from the United States, Reuters noted.<\/p>\n

At the same time, India is under pressure to boost U.S. LNG imports to help narrow its trade deficit with Washington, but the country has steadily reduced its dependence on gas for power generation as clean energy capacity has ramped up, Reuters added.<\/p>\n

Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, called it a \u201cremarkable rise” from just 2.3 GW in 2014, crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u2019s vision and initiatives like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for High-Efficiency Solar Modules. He said the achievement strengthens India\u2019s path toward Atmanirbhar Bharat and its target of 500 GW non-fossil capacity by 2030.<\/p>\n

The Government of India\u2019s commitment is to make India self-reliant in solar PV manufacturing and establish the country as a major player in the global value chain. This commitment is supported through a comprehensive set of initiatives, including the PLI Scheme for High Efficiency Solar PV Modules and measures to provide a level playing field for the Indian manufacturers. The catalytic effect of these interventions has resulted in an expansion in solar module manufacturing capacity, from just 2.3 GW in 2014 to over 100 GW today. This reinforces India\u2019s commitment to achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030 and contributes meaningfully to global decarbonization efforts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
