England were dismissed for just 131 runs against South Africa, with more than half of their allotted overs still remaining in the first one-day international held in Leeds on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Multiple records were broken with their shambolic performance.<\/p>\n

It was England\u2019s fifth-shortest innings in terms of overs faced in ODIs, and their lowest-ever first-innings total against the Proteas.<\/p>\n

How England Were Bowled Out For 131 By South Africa?<\/h2>\n

Left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj (4\/22) and all-rounder Wiaan Mulder (3\/33) were the chief architects of England\u2019s downfall at an overcast Headingley, following Proteas captain Temba Bavuma\u2019s decision to bowl first.<\/p>\n

Opener Jamie Smith was the sole England batsman to make a significant contribution, scoring 54 runs, while the next highest score came from Jos Buttler who managed just 15.<\/p>\n

Entering the match without any 50-over preparation, England faced a South African side buoyed by a recent 2-1 series victory in Australia.<\/p>\n

England captain Harry Brook (12) and Joe Root (14), both of whom had played in a gripping drawn Test series against India before joining the Hundred franchise competition, were dismissed cheaply on their home ground in Yorkshire.<\/p>\n

Brook, who had maintained a perfect record in his six previous matches as England\u2019s white-ball captain, saw this streak endangered as he was run out.<\/p>\n

Despite the absence of fast bowlers Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen, England\u2019s batting collapse came on a good pitch, losing their last eight wickets for just 49 runs after being relatively safe at 82\/2.<\/p>\n

The Proteas capitalised on all seven opportunities presented to them, with wicketkeeper Ryan Rickelton taking a splendid diving catch to dismiss Root off the bowling of Lungi Ngidi.<\/p>\n

Maharaj, the top-ranked ODI bowler globally, had Jacob Bethell (1) caught off a thick outside edge and took a simple return catch to dismiss Will Jacks.<\/p>\n

Mulder\u2019s consecutive deliveries removed Buttler and Jofra Archer, followed by Maharaj taking two wickets in successive balls to end England\u2019s innings in 24.3 overs. He trapped Adil Rashid lbw and then bowled last man Sonny Baker for a golden duck on Baker\u2019s international debut.<\/p>\n
