Last month, the collection was Rs 1.96 lakh crore.

The gross domestic revenue grew 9.6 per cent to Rs 1.37 lakh crore, while tax from imports dipped 1.2 per cent to Rs 49,354 crore in August. GST refunds were down 20 per cent year-on-year to Rs 19,359 crore.

Net GST revenue stood at Rs 1.67 lakh crore in August 2025, recording 10.7 per cent year-on-year growth.

The data is released just two days before the meeting of the GST Council, comprising Centre and states, which will deliberate on rate rationalisation and reducing number of tax slabs.

Abhishek Jain, indirect tax head & partner, KPMG said, “Broadly, collections have been aligned with the past couple of months, though refund disbursals have seen some reduction. What will be interesting to watch is the impact on collections in the coming months, particularly with the anticipated rate rejig and certain revenue streams stalling, such as those from online real-money gaming.”

Meanwhile, India’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew at 7.8 per cent in the first quarter ended June 30, 2025, according to the latest official data. The number surpassed all GDP expectations as most analysts had pegged the growth at 6.5-7%.

The Indian economy had grown at 6.5% in the year-ago quarter, and at 7.4% in the previous quarter (Q1 FY26).

“The robust GDP numbers for Q1, pleasantly higher then estimated consensus note, is a tight hit on the rhetoric mimicking dead economy jibe…Indian economy is alive and kicking well, largely unfettered by noise,” SBI Research said in its report ‘Ecowrap’.

On the proposed GST cuts, it said trends indicate that while a cut in GST rates may lead to about 3-4% m-o-m decline in revenue immediately (Rs 5,000 crore on a monthly basis/ annualised basis the loss could be around Rs 60,000 crore) but in the longer run revenue rises in the range of 5-6% m-o-m. This in the past had translated into a revenue gain of Rs 1 lakh crore.

Mohammad Haris

Haris is Deputy News Editor (Business) at news18.com.
