Sumona Chakravarti Speaks Out After Mob Blocks Her Car In Mumbai<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n

Actress Sumona Chakravarti took to her Instagram to share a disturbing incident, revealing that her car was mobbed in broad daylight by Maratha quota protesters in South Mumbai on Sunday, August 31. The Maratha quota protests in Mumbai, led by activist Manoj Jarange Patil entered the third day on Sunday. Sumona shared in detail about the harrowing incident, claiming that while driving from Colaba to Fort at about 12:30 pm, her car was blocked by the protestors. She claimed that one man banged on her bonnet, while others banged on the car\u2019s windows, shouting slogans like \u2018Jai Maharashtra\u2019 and laughing. She questioned the law and order in Mumbai, claiming that there was no police, and that she felt very unsafe. She slammed the \u2018lawlessness\u2019, and said that Mumbaikars deserve the right to feel safe in their own city.<\/p>\n

Sumona Chakravarti Recounts \u2018Feeling Unsafe\u2019 After Her Car Was Mobbed<\/strong><\/p>\n

On Sunday, Sumona Chakravarti took to her Instagram and wrote, \u201c12:30 this afternoon. I\u2019m driving from Colaba to Fort. And suddenly-my car is blocked by a mob. One man with an orange stole banging on my bonnet, smirking. Pressing his protruding belly against my car. Shimmying in front of me like he\u2019s proving some sick point. His friends banging on my windows, shouting \u201cJai Maharashtra!” & laughing. We moved a little ahead & repeat of the same thing. Twice in a span of 5 mins. No police. (The ones we saw later were just sitting, chatting, hanging) No law & order. Just me, in my car, in broad daylight, in South Bombay-feeling unsafe. And the streets? Piled with banana peels, plastic bottles, filth. Pavements taken over. Protesters eating, sleeping, bathing, cooking, pissing, shitting, video calling, making reels, doing Mumbai darshan in the name of protest. A complete mockery of civic sense.”<\/p>\n

She further added that she has lived in Mumbai almost all her life, and has never felt unsafe before, especially in South Mumbai. However, for the first time in years, she genuinely felt vulnerable. \u201cBut today, for the first time in years, in broad daylight inside the safety of my own car I felt genuinely unsafe. Vulnerable. And I suddenly felt lucky-lucky that a male friend was with me. I couldn\u2019t help but think, if I had been alone, then what??? I was tempted to record a video but quickly realised that this might provoke\/instigate them further. So i didn\u2019t. It\u2019s frightening when you realize that no matter who you are, or where you are, law and order can collapse in seconds,” she wrote.<\/p>\n

Sumona Chakravarti Slams \u2018Absolute Lawlessness\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

She further added, \u201cPeaceful protests exist- we\u2019ve seen them for causes far more urgent. And yet, those are the ones the police clamp down on. But here? Absolute lawlessness. As a tax paying citizen, as a woman, and as someone who loves this city, I\u2019m left disturbed. We deserve better than this mockery of governance and civic responsibility. We deserve the right to feel safe in our own city.”<\/p>\n

In her caption, she expressed her disappointment, and said that it doesn\u2019t feel like a progressive society or the \u2018fastest growing economy.\u2019 \u201cNot the Digital Bharat they keep talking about. Because when casteism, religion, politics, corruption, bureaucracy, illiteracy and unemployment are running the show\u2014this isn\u2019t development. It\u2019s decay. #MarathaQuotaProtest,” she wrote.<\/p>\n

About Maratha Quota Protest<\/strong><\/p>\n

Manoj Jarange\u2019s stir at Mumbai\u2019s Azad Maidan for Maratha quota entered the third day on Sunday. He has been demanding a 10% quota for Marathas and wants them to be recognised as Kunbis \u2014 an agrarian caste included in the Other Backward Classes category \u2014 which will make them eligible for reservation in government jobs and education. \u00a0The 43-year-old activist has been staging an indefinite hunger strike at the Azad Maidan from Friday to press for the reservation.<\/p>\n
