Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone are back together for their latest collaboration, a sci-fi black comedy titled Bugonia. Following acclaimed projects such as The Favourite, Poor Things, and Kinds of Kindness, the duo reunites to bring a twisted remake of the 2003 South Korean cult hit Save the Green Planet! to international audiences.<\/p>\n

The film is set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival on August 28, with a limited theatrical release on October 24 and a wide release on October 31. Fans have already caught a glimpse of Stone\u2019s bold new look in the first full-length trailer, released by Focus Features on August 28.<\/p>\n

Bugonia follows the story of Michelle Fuller (Emma Stone), a high-powered CEO kidnapped by two conspiracy-obsessed young men, played by Jesse Plemons and newcomer Aidan Delbis. Believing Michelle is an alien intent on destroying Earth, the captors shave her head to \u201cprevent” her from contacting the mothership and confine her to an underground bunker. The cast also includes Alicia Silverstone and Stavros Halkias, rounding out a quirky ensemble.<\/p>\n

The screenplay was penned by Will Tracy, with producers including Ed Guiney, Andrew Lowe, Ari Aster, Lars Knudsen, Miky Lee, Jerry Kyoungboum Ko, alongside Lanthimos and Stone herself. The trailer features Chappell Roan\u2019s viral song Good Luck, Babe!, pairing Stone\u2019s witty attempts to outsmart her captors with the film\u2019s darkly comedic tone.<\/p>\n

During a Venice press conference, Stone admitted her belief in extraterrestrial life, saying, \u201cI\u2019m coming out with it \u2014 I believe in aliens!” Lanthimos highlighted the film\u2019s real-world resonance, noting that Bugonia reflects current societal anxieties.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnfortunately, not much of the dystopia in this film is very fictional. A lot of it is reflective of the real world,” he explained. From technology and AI to climate change and geopolitical conflicts, Lanthimos believes the story prompts audiences to reflect on the pressing issues of our times, making Bugonia both entertaining and thought-provoking.<\/p>\n

With its inventive story, strong performances, and dark humor, Bugonia promises to be a standout in the sci-fi genre this fall, offering a bold and surreal cinematic experience.<\/p>\n
