After giving the first round of the Duleep Trophy, which begins August 27 in Bengaluru, Shubman will check in at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Centre of Excellence (CoE) later this week. The newly appointed Indian Test captain was supposed to lead the North Zone in the tournament, marking the beginning of India\u2019s domestic season 2025-26. However, he was ruled out due to illness.<\/p>\n

The Times of India reports that Gill is recovering well and will soon resume training. His blood tests showed no major concerns, and with the viral flu behind him, he\u2019s expected to return to full-intensity practice shortly. As he skips the Duleep Trophy opener, Haryana\u2019s Ankit Kumar, the original vice-captain, will captain North Zone against East Zone.<\/p>\n

Gill Appointed As Vice-Captain For Asia Cup<\/strong><\/p>\n

25-year-old right-handed batter from Punjab will be Suryakumar Yadav\u2019s deputy in the Asia Cup 2025, which is set to be played from September 9 to 28 in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Gill last played a T20I for India on July 30, 2024, against Sri Lanka in Pallekele, and in that fixture, as well, he was India\u2019s vice-captain.<\/p>\n

In the 15-member squad for the Asia Cup, Jasprit Bumrah is also included along with Jitesh Sharma, who last played a T20I for India in January 2024, but there was no place for Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer.<\/p>\n

Two More India Cricketers To Skip Duleep Trophy<\/strong><\/p>\n

Besides Gill, the North Zone squad also comprises two more Asia Cup-bound India players. The fast-bowling duo of Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana may feature in the opening round before leaving for UAE, where the Asia Cup will be held.<\/p>\n

India to open campaign against the UAE<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the Asia Cup 2025, India will open their campaign on September 10 in Dubai against the United Arab Emirates and then take on arch-rivals Pakistan in the high-voltage match at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on September 14. India\u2019s third and final Group A match is scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi on September 19 against Oman.<\/p>\n
