Veteran actor and BJP leader Joy Banerjee, 62, passed away on Monday at a private hospital near the bypass in Kolkata. He had been battling a long-standing respiratory illness and diabetes, with his condition worsening in the past few days.<\/p>\n

Joy Banerjee, born on May 23, 1963, achieved significant success in the film industry before venturing into politics. He contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections on a BJP ticket from Birbhum, facing off against current MP and Tollywood actress Shatabdi Roy. <\/p>\n

In 2019, he ran as a BJP candidate against Trinamool MP Sajda Ahmed from Uluberia. Despite announcing his departure from the BJP in November 2021, he remained a member of the party\u2019s state committee.<\/p>\n

Following his death, party workers visited the hospital to pay their respects. Joy Banerjee was the former husband of Trinamool councillor Anan Banerjee.<\/p>\n

Joy Banerjee began his film career with Nimalur Banabas<\/em> (1982), directed by Bidesh Sarkar, where he starred opposite Debashree Roy. He received critical acclaim for his performance in Chopper<\/em> (1987), directed by Nabyendu Chatterjee, and later appeared in Hirak Jayanti<\/em> (1990), which became a major box office success.<\/p>\n
