The Trinamool Congress on Saturday termed the Joint Parliament Committee (JPC) formed to look into the three bills that lay down the framework for the removal of the Prime Minister and Chief Ministers, as “farce” and said that it will not nominate anyone from the party to the JPC.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe oppose the 130th Constitution Amendment Bill at the stage of introduction, and in our view, the JPC is a farce. Therefore, we are not nominating anyone from AITC,” the party said in a statement.<\/p>\n

The party has been aggressively opposing the bill both inside and outside of Parliament.<\/p>\n

The Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill 2025, the Constitution (One Hundred And Thirtieth Amendment) Bill 2025, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill 2025, were introduced in Lok Sabha on Wednesday, a day before the conclusion of the Monsoon Session.<\/p>\n

The introduction of the bills provoked strong opposition. In Lok Sabha, tensions escalated as copies of the bills were torn and thrown, with members from both ruling and opposition parties confronting each other when Union Home Minister Amit Shah proceeded to present the bills.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s In The Bill?<\/h3>\n

The\u00a0Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill<\/a>\u00a0proposes that a prime minister, chief minister, or minister will be automatically removed from their respective offices if they are in judicial custody for 30 consecutive days and fail to secure bail during this tenure.<\/p>\n

However, the condition remains that the minister must have been arrested for an offence that carries a punishment of five years or more.<\/p>\n

They have been referred to a Joint Committee of Parliament.<\/p>\n

Both Houses have passed a resolution to refer the bills to a JPC comprising 21 members from the Lok Sabha and 10 from the Rajya Sabha. The committee has been mandated to submit its report to the House in the Winter Session, which is likely to be convened in the third week of November.<\/p>\n

The proposed legislation provides a legal framework for the removal of the prime minister, chief ministers, and ministers on arrest for 30 consecutive days on serious charges.<\/p>\n
