UPI payments are big on demand, and most of them work safely. And it seems the popular mobile payment will soon ditch the traditional PIN system and rely on more security features. A new media report claims the body governing UPI payments is looking to foolproof the payment system by making it work through your biometrics on devices like smartphones. <\/span><\/p>\n

Yes, instead of the 4 or 6-digit passcodes to authenticate the UPI payment, you can simply use your face or fingerprint credentials to send the money through apps.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

UPI Payments Via Face ID: How It Might Work<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The report by Business Standard<\/em> claims NPCI wants to secure the UPI payment channel and biometrics could be the ideal solution for its challenges. Most people using smartphones these days lock their phones using fingerprint ID or Face recognition tools that work exclusively on the iPhones.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These are unique characteristics and duplicating them is a lot of effort, even for the most sophisticated hackers. More importantly, having biometrics means you don\u2019t need to remember more passcodes (both 4 or 6-digit) and easily clear the payment by using your thumb print or facial features.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Imagine, if you can use the registered fingerprint ID on the Android phone to send money to your friends or family, and not remember the passcode. That seems to be the thought behind this plan from the governing entity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Paytm, Google Pay and PhonePe are some of the widely used UPI apps in the country, and it is a matter of the NPCI working in tandem with these developers on the backend to make biometrics compatible with the final stage of payment authentication as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mobile Payment With High Risk Issues<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Aadhaar is another platform that has been registered with biometric details that can be locked within the account manually. It seems most experts are in favour of UPI payments moving to other ways of authentication, to make it easy and also equally secure. The report does not say if NPCI will actually go ahead with this idea but it is clearly thinking of new ways to make the popular and on-demand payment system reliable and secure.<\/span><\/p>\n

Third-party UPI apps will have to integrate with the new payment system, which should be easy since most of them let you lock the apps using their active biometric scans.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The only concern about this supposed change is that in case your phone gets stolen or hacked, your device then becomes the direct gateway to your money, and retrieving that could add a whole new layer of authentication with these apps and the banks at the same time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So, we hope that if the change is made, they make it secure from all corners, or else people will start losing money from their bank accounts. <\/span><\/p>\n
