Jason Isaacs thinks Johnny Flynn\u2019s portrayal of Lucius Malfoy will be totally different to his. The 62-year-old actor portrayed the villainous patriarch in many of the Harry Potter movies and while he has congratulated his Operation Mincemeat co-star in landing the role in HBO\u2019s upcoming TV adaptation of JK Rowling\u2019s novels, he refused to reveal if he offered any advice.<\/p>\n

He told Entertainment Weekly: \u201cJohnny will do his own thing. Maybe he\u2019ll be more charming. I doubt that he\u2019ll look like me, because that was the look I came up with and he\u2019s far too original to want to copy anything.”<\/p>\n

Asked if Johnny had got in touch with him about the role, he added: \u201cIf he had, I wouldn\u2019t tell anyone. I texted him, and I can say that because that\u2019s my domain to talk about. I texted because we did a film together and we were friendly. He\u2019s absolutely delightful and phenomenally talented, and I have no doubt he\u2019s going to do something completely different from what I did because I did my own thing.”<\/p>\n

Jason is looking forward to seeing the new series because he thinks it will be a total departure from the movies. He said: \u201cThey\u2019re redesigning everything from scratch. They\u2019re redesigning Hogwarts and the costumes and they\u2019re writing all these fabulous new scripts that are expanding each book into whole season. And it\u2019ll be fab \u2014 it\u2019ll be for a new generation. It\u2019ll be their version of Harry Potter.”<\/p>\n

While The White Lotus star previously claimed he will be \u201clong forgotten” once someone else plays Lucius, he insisted that \u201cwhat will never go away are the books.” He said: \u201cIt all starts and comes from the books, and the books are beloved. But Johnny\u2019s great. I can\u2019t wait to see what everyone does, frankly, all the cast are amazing. I\u2019m really looking forward to seeing what John Lithgow does. All of them.”<\/p>\n

And Jason admitted it is a relief to be able to watch the show without it seeming \u201cnarcissistic”. He said, \u201cIt\u2019s going to be fab because it\u2019s not like I watch the films, because I\u2019m in them, so that\u2019s a bit weird for me. But now I can watch them with unalloyed fandom instead of thinking there\u2019s a narcissism of watching myself.”<\/p>\n

In the Harry Potter series, Lox Pratt will take over Tom Felton\u2019s role as Lucius\u2019 son Draco Malfoy, while Dominic McLaughlin will play the titular boy wizard, and Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout will play Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley respectively. Nick Frost has been cast as Rubeus Hagrid, John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape.<\/p>\n
